A cult convinced 918 people to commit suicide in the jungle, and it was legal beforehand.

Jonestown in Guyana was established by Jim Jones, a radical pastor who moved followers to the jungle in 1977. They built a self-sufficient community. In 1978, U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan visited to investigate. Jones had Ryan murdered. Hours later, Jones ordered the murder-suicide. Over 900 people died, including 260 children. Jones had full legal authority over the community—no laws prevented what happened.
